It is that time of year again and we are beginning to see bright colored dresses and open toed shoes filling shop windows. While packing for your spring getaway, whether it be to the blue waters for a cruise or just to our very own Wrightsville Beach, keep these tips in mind!

Incorporate Color:

A dress like this one by Elana Kattan is ideal for this time of year. Long enough for warmth on those chillier evenings on the deck but vibrant and lively enough to welcome spring. Something strapless like this is a good investment in early spring as it will carry you through the summer.

Be Bold:

Accessorizing never disappoints. A bold and attention catching pair of earrings always does the trick on an otherwise simple outfit. Turn your white blouse or tank top up a notch with some of these designs by local designers!

Remember the basics:

While it is easy to get caught up in spring trends, keep in mind that there are certain styles that will never go out of style! A classic striped shirt is always a good piece to have at this time of year. A thin fabric in a long sleeve style is perfect for the in-between weather we often experience in  March and April.

“Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man.”  ~Benjamin Franklin

This time of year is for fresh new beginnings. So many people make resolutions that – let’s be honest – will be forgotten come Valentine’s Day. Here’s a suggestion for a New Year’s Resolution you will have fun keeping… Take some tips from the French and create a style that is timeless and sophisticated, never garish or overly trendy but always uniquely you.

Don’t you love how French women always seem so elegant and effortlessly chic – no matter the occasion or time of day?

Black with just enough bright gold accents? Yes, please!!

So, you ask, what is the secret?? These women develop their own style with simplicity and elegance, always wear what is flattering to themselves, and believe in quality not quantity.

Never steal another woman’s look!! If you see an ensemble you like, take inspiration, but remember, you never want to be merely a carbon copy of beauty. Find an outfit with a similar feel without being a mirror image. Make the look your own with pieces new and old from your own closet. If it isn’t uniquely you, trust me, you will not be able to pull it off.

Another reason you should always make your look your own is because not every trend works for everyone. We are all different shapes and shades, and figuring out what is flattering individually should be as fundamental as learning to read and write. Sure, we could all wear black and call it a day, but why not make it fun and incorporate some prints and different cuts? Keep in mind that every piece you wear comprises a collective look that will either create a negative illusion or reveal your true beauty.  Have a few pounds to hide? A long, chandelier earring will elongate and slim your entire look. Need some extra curves here and there? Ruching in all the right places will do the trick. What works for her may not work for you, and vice versa. And, if you find a piece you absolutely love but that is ill-fitting, find yourself a fabulous tailor and have it altered to fit you just right. The investment will be well worth it in the end.

Finally, remember that the object of the game is not to amplify your wardrobe to colossal proportions. Start with a few staples – classic items that will carry you through the years, no matter the rise and fall of varying trends. Instead of picking up every sale item you come across that is a “steal,” use discretion and purchase quality items that will last. Then, accessorize according to what appeals to you and what flatters you.

And the best accessory of all? Confidence and grace, in every moment and toward every being, will complete your look and truly keep you looking elegant and effortlessly chic.

When many people think of eco-friendly they don’t realize that this doesn’t always mean organic materials. “Green” fashion is a growing industry that has been getting a lot of attention due to a growing awarness of the state of the environment.

The truth is that while organic cottons and natural fibers are better for the environment, there are other ways to turn your wardrobe “green”!

First of all, I don’t mean to discredit organic fibers at all. Many designers have been expanding their materials to include organic/natural fibers. For example, this dress by Kelly B. Couture is made of organic cotton, hemp, and silk.

The other option when shopping for eco-friendly goods is the recycled path. The idea of turning something old into something new and wearable is becoming more and more popular. Not only is this option less harmful to the environment but it is nice to know that your new piece has a history and a story behind it.

Most of you are probably just arriving home from work.

Ever feel like your work wardrobe is a little dull? There is one sure-fire way to make it feel more youthful and stylish. Accessorizing!

Any blazer or button-down is going to feel much more feminine with the right jewelry. For instance, if you wear a white button down with dress pants or a pencil skirt try pairing it with a long gold chain necklace. The length of a piece like this makes the statment that you are feminine and trendy rather than a smaller piece that can get lost somewhere beneath your collar.

If blazers are your go-to work staple, try some fun bangles or a bold cuff. Necklaces sometimes get covered by the bulk of the lapels. Also, earrings are a great place to play around! The ones below have enough color to be noticed and to brighten your look!

The point is that office rules and dress-codes can sometimes make you feel like you’re getting dressed in your boyfriend/ husband’s closet but jewelry can make your look more feminine and a lot more fun!

Facebook asked and you answered.
What is a wearable trend that you are excited about this season? After reading the responses, we at Ziabird compared them to the Fall runways. It turns out the looks you love were lacing the runways of New York last February.
One particular trend that was mentioned on Facebook was knee high socks. Rag & Bone had them incorporated into almost every look of their line.  Worn with booties or poking out of knee-high boots, this look is stylish and comfortable.

For Fall, try pairing your knee-highs with a great casual dress. We have the perfect one by Kelly B. It’s black with long sleeves and ruffles around the neck. Throw on your grey socks and black flats or boots and you are set! Feel free to throw in a pop of color with accessories like a vibrant felted scarf by Katherine Brenner or a peacock feather headband by LovMely. We have both of these in-stock at Ziabird, so come see us!

Fall is all about easing into the cooler tones and thicker fabrics, and of course looking fabulous while doing it. A trend to try this Fall? Feathers. Not to the extreme of Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fall runway but in moderation. The perfect way to do this for any age and style is by adding feather accessories to your Fall wardrobe.

With this trend being prominent for the season, it is important to know that feather accessories are not only found in browns and blacks. In fact, the key to sporting this trend is to be bold! Peacock colors look great with any casual outfit and beige and pink tones look great for a more formal occasion.

If you’ve been trying to incorporate color trends into your look, why not combine your favorite color with your new feather accessories? Check out these purple feather earrings by local designer Emily Jones of Loon Jewelry. Not only can they be found on Wilmington locals but they have recently been picked up the wardrobe apartments of ABC shows like Desperate Housewives!

Fashion Week has just wrapped in NY, which means that magazines and stylists are compiling pictures and noting trends…for next Spring! No need for us to think that far ahead though. Let’s take a look at runway looks for Fall 2010 and see what trends to look out for in the coming months.

1.  Red

  • While the color red is always classic, it covered the runways in February Fashion Week. The difference in this season’s red trend is what the color is paired with, anything between camel and purple. The picture featured here is from Tommy Hilfiger’s show in NY.

Any outfit can be brought to life with red jewelry. At Ziabird, we are really excited about this trend and the store is filled with it! Our latest fix?  These dangling red Czech glass earrings by Wendy Mink.

2. Layered Turtle Neck

  • Turtlenecks are a staple as the colder months start creeping in but a few shows made the classic turtle neck look trendier than usual. Try layering your black turtleneck underneath a print dress to keep you warm and stylish and check out Proenza Schouler’s Fall runway for more looks like this. Layers around the face look great with bold earrings!

3. Velvet

  • I once read an article in a magazine that stated  people take cues from things like the fabric you wear or the drink you’re holding and base character traits from these things. For instance, if you hold a cold drink, people think you have an icy personality and if you wear a soft fabric, people perceive you as kind and comfortable. Since I read that, I have been drawn to delicate fabrics and velvet is definitely on my list for Fall/ Winter, though in small doses.

4. Camel

  • Though this color palette does not do some people justice, everyone can incorporate this trend into their Fall wardrobe to some extent. If you feel the color is not appropriate near your face, try a skirt or shoe. The classic neutrality of it when mixed with colors or other neutrals is simply divine. Zac Posen’s show was filled with this color pallette. Zac Posen

Try mixing up a pale camel top with a metallic accent like copper for the Autumn season. Come to Ziabird to check out this great bracelet by Beth Zink!

5. Lace

  • Nothing is more feminine than a sheer lace overlay. This season it is seen in skirts, tops, leggings, and dresses! Appropriate for work or dinner out, wear a lace top under a blazer for the perfect combination of business and pleasure.
